Medical Clearance for Surgical Procedures
Medical Clearance for Surgical Procedures
Medical clearance is a pre-surgical evaluation performed by your child’s pediatrician to help ensure it is safe for your child to undergo a planned surgical or diagnostic procedure.
Why Medical Clearance Is Important
- Reviews your child’s overall health and medical history
- Identifies conditions that may affect anesthesia or surgery
- Ensures chronic conditions (such as asthma) are well controlled
- Reviews current medications and allergies
- Helps reduce the risk of complications before surgery
What to Expect
- Review of your child’s medical history and recent illnesses
- Physical examination
- Completion of required forms for the surgeon or hospital
- Possible labs or tests if requested
What to Bring to the Appointment
- Surgical clearance forms from the surgeon or hospital
- Date and type of scheduled procedure
- List of current medications and allergies
- Immunization records (if not already on file)
- Recent test results or hospital paperwork, if available

Important Note
Medical clearance does not replace the surgeon’s or anesthesiologist’s evaluation. Final clearance decisions are made by the surgical team on the day of the procedure.
